Islam and Non-Muslims
Christ in Islam
Question:
Christ Jesus role in Islam is something that appears not to make sense, but maybe someone can supply a logical answer.
Several Muslims I've spoken told me that they believe Jesus to be a prophet of god, but not the Son of God. This would seem to be an obvious contradiction, since for one to be God's prophet one would have to speak the truth, and Jesus said he was Gods' son.
Is Jesus God's son, or was he lying?
Answer:
Please keep in mind that the following answer is from a neutral perspective. It is neither to prove the claim of the Muslims nor that of the Christians. The answer is only to provide a better understanding of the Muslim stance, not to prove its correctness or otherwise.
Muslims believe Jesus (pbuh) to be a true prophet of God because the Qur'an (the holy book of the Muslims) has given Jesus (pbuh) this status. Moreover, according to the Qur'an the teachings of Jesus like all other prophets and messengers of God included:
1. God alone deserves to be worshipped;
2. Like the prophets of the past, he (i.e. Jesus) too was a prophet - not a son - of God;
3. All mankind shall have to answer for their deeds on the Day of Judgment. The successful on that day, shall be in everlasting bliss, while the unsuccessful shall be doomed forever.
In view of the this information provided by the Qur'an, the Muslims believe that either the word 'son', as it appears in the Gospels to describe Jesus' status, is wrongly ascribed to God or to Jesus - as the case may be - or has been used figuratively, rather than literally as is also the case in Psalms 2: 7, 12 where David (pbuh) is reported to have said:
"I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, 'You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make nations your heritage and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like potter's vessel."
Thus, according to the Muslim minds, the answer to your question: "Is Jesus God's son, or was he lying?" is "Neither". Jesus is neither the Son of God nor was he lying. The word 'Son' has either been wrongly ascribed to Jesus or has been incorrectly interpreted to imply a literal 'Son'.
