Was Maryam a Prophetess?
Question:
Was hazrat Maryam also considered by schools as a prophetess. Tafseer maarif in SURAH TAHREEM mentions that most scholars consider her to be almost equal to a nabi {what about the rest}.

Answer:
Salaam Brother
Many thanks for your query. There is no mention in the Qur'an that Hazrat Maryam (Mary) pbuh, was a prophetess. All the prophets of Allah were men.
Albeit, the Qur'an recognizes her as the most exalted of all women, as suggested by the following verse, "and (remind them of the time) when the angels said: "O Mary! God selected you, and cleansed you, and has preferred you over all the women in the world." (3:42)
In reference to the second part of your question, in the opinion of our scholars, the reference to Hazrat Maryam pbuh in surah Tehreem pertains to recognition of her chastity, being blessed with Jesus pbuh's miracle birth and also her obedience towards God Almighty. There is no mention that she has been given a status equal to a prophet of God.
In the opinion of our scholars, it would not be appropriate for us to judge and compare pious people who have been mentioned in the Qur'an. A Nabi has a very high status and at the same time, Maryam also was chosen by God as the best of women, which status is higher is not for us to decide and is not relevant either. We learn from their life equally and consider them as our role models.
I enclose a link from our sister web site with the complete translation and commentry of the Surah.
