Question:

Further on 'Birth of Jesus Christ'...

Salaam Brother,

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Regarding the birth of Jesus Christ, I have seen the same verses where Bibi Marium (A.S.) was given the great news about a son. Ghulam Ahmed Pervaiz has also mentioned them in his articles and journals. What's your opinion about the following links?

http://www.aboutquran.com/ba/bio/misc/Ismat.AbuSaleem_IbnMaryam.pdf

(It's in Urdu)

Do you consider these journals and articles valid in the light of Holy Quran, nowhere have the verses of the Holy Quran been (Nauzubillah) denied. They have negated the concept of Virgin Birth while using the verses of The Holy Quran. Our Beacon is owned by Dr. Shabbir Ahmed MD, I am not sure whether anyone from UIUK have come across his books so far, even though they are available online too. Do you think that these links are misleading by any chance or do you think that believing in the Virgin Birth of Hazrat Isa Alayhis'Salaam is a basic tenet of our faith or Aqeedah?

I hope you would understand my concern about the issue.

Thanks a lot once again for your time and consideration.

Answer:

Salaam Brother

Many thanks for your reply. In reference to your queries whilst the verses of the Quran have not been denied it is the interpretation of verses that is incorrect and incomplete.

Regarding the Virgin birth of Jesus pbuh I will like to quote two verses of Qur'an that relate to this issue.

003.047
She (Mary pbuh) said: My Lord! How can I have a child when no mortal hath touched me? He said: Even so, Allah creates what He pleases; when He has decreed a matter, He only says to it, Be, and it is.

003.059
The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be". And he was.

The author has quoted 19:22-23 stating that Mary is shown grieving, then talking to her husband. Marrying him in violation of the sanctuary rules, lack of shelter and labour pains all add to her grief which she is expressing. In my opinion the correct translation is:

So she conceived him (Christ pbuh), and she retired with him to a remote place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): "Ah! Would that I had died before this! Would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"

Another point that has been raised by the author regarding his claim to negate the virgin birth of Christ pbuh is that, "Allah does all things according to his Laws. You will never find Allah’s Laws changing or deviating" and, "The grand empire of human learning, development, invention, science and technology would have failed to come off ground if Allah’s physical Laws in the Universe were to keep changing. Pregnancy requires the union of the male and the female chromosomes. Allah never changes His Laws. Therefore, the idea of a virgin birth, although popular among the Christians and Muslims, is non-Quranic and absolutely erroneous."

When we study the history of prophets from Qur'an, we see multiple examples of miracles and happenings which are against the physical laws. Abraham pbuh being thrown in fire and remaining unhurt and Abraham pbuh and his wife being given a child when they were very old. The flood at the time of Noah pbuh that destroyed all human life and only those who were in the Noah's Ark survived. The staff of Moses pbuh performing miracles, the plagues that were inflicted upon the people of Pharaoh, the splitting of Red Sea to save his nation, and feeding the nation for years in the desert. Jonah pbuh being swallowed by a fish and then surviving; Zechariah and his wife being given a child when they were very old. Christ pbuh was able to speak in the cradle and he was given miracles to heal the blind and lepers. Christ pbuh was recalled alive by God and did not meet his death on Earth. All these happenings and many others clearly show that God is the supreme power and can make happen what He wants. Whilst most things follow a cause and effect relationship but He has the power and wisdom to make things happen without this as well.

The author writes:

The Qur’an describes Zechariah and wife begetting Yahya a. s. against some odds but not against Allah's Laws. 3:40 'Zechariah prayed to Allah, but then wondered, “My Lord! How could I have a son when old age has overtaken me already and my wife is barren?” He said, “So it will be, Allah does everything according to His Laws.” (The infertility in his wife was cured 21:90).

The explanation given above itself negates the authors statement in the previous quote that "Allah does all things according to His Laws. You will never find Allah’s Laws changing or deviating." We cannot say that just by praying to God we can make Allah change his Laws. Particularly when the basis given to negate the virgin birth of Christ is that "The grand empire of human learning, development, invention, science and technology would have failed to come off ground if Allah’s physical Laws in the Universe were to keep changing. Pregnancy requires the union of the male and the female chromosomes. Allah never changes His Laws." The question then is that how Zechariah pbuh and his wife can have a child when she is barren and passed the age of conceiving? Is that not against the natural laws that govern the world?

Finally you have asked whether these links are misleading. My answer is that indeed they are because they represent an inaccurate interpretation of Qur'an. You have inquired whether belief in the virgin birth of Christ pbuh is a basic tenet of faith? My answer is, no.
It is not an essential criteria on which someone could be called a Muslim or a non Muslim.
