Music: Haram, Disliked or Nothing?
Last Updated on Saturday, 06 August 2011 13:37
Question: What is the stance on Music with respect to Hadith/Quran/Sunnah. Some people call it near Haram and others say it is 'disliked'. I have also heard that music can lead you to bigger sins.

Answer: Salaam sister
Many thanks for your query. In the opinion of our scholars in the light of Quran, Sunnah and Hadith, music per se is not forbidden in Islam.
In Qur'an there is no specific verse that prohibits music. Zaboor (or the Pslams) includes psalms that prophet David pbuh used to sing on a harp that glorified God. There are references to music instruments in the psalms. There is no specific prohibition of music in the Sunnah of prophet pbuh.
As far as the ahadith are concerned, in the opinion of our scholars, we need to understand that firstly, ahadith are not primary source of understanding Islam and they need to be understood in the light of the Qur'an and Sunnah . Secondly, we cannot determine any opinion on a matter by reading an isolated hadith. To fully understand any matter addressed by a hadith we need to make sure that we collect all ahadith on that issue and analyze them.
In the enclosed links from our sister web sites we can see mention of ahadith that prohibit and those which encourage music and songs.
In the opinion of our scholars, ahadith that pertain to prohibition of music involved gatherings associated with music, dancing, drinking and lewdness. Of course this type of music and gatherings would be against the ethos of our religion. In contrast, any type of music that does not encourage Haram, is Halal.
In answer to the second part I accept as explained in the previous paragraph music of certain types can lead to bigger sins but this cannot be generalized to all types of music.
