Most Heinous of All Sins
Question:
What could be the "most heinous of all the sins" referred to in the following Ayats? Please give the answer from the Quran.
Thanking you with regards.
AN-Nisa 4:31:
If ye (but) eschew the most heinous of the things which ye are forbidden to do, We shall expel out of you all the evil in you, and admit you to a gate of great honour.
And An-Najm 53-32:
Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers' wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil.

Answer:
Salaam brother
Many thanks for your query. I enclose response given by one of our scholars on our sister web site. I have added some of the numbers of surahs relevant to the text.
Broadly speaking, we can say that there are two kinds of sins: "Kabirah" and "Saghirah", and hereby follows their details in the words of Brother Moiz Amjad.
"Kabaair" are generally interpreted to be those sins, regarding which the Qur'an has mentioned the punishment of Hell fire. The Qur'an has, indeed, mentioned that if a person lives a life which is clear of 'Kabaair', then God, with His encompassing mercy, shall wash away his minor sins and 'slips' (saghaair) in the life of this world.
Some of the sins, which are clearly among the 'Kabaair' are: Shirk (ascribing partners to God) (4:48), rejection of the truth even after it has completely manifested itself (7:40-41), murder (4:93), fornication (25:68-70), falsely accusing a chaste person of sexual infidelity (24:23), knowingly depriving someone of his rights (4:10), bearing a false witness, knowingly committing injustice (while put in a position to decide), after accepting Islam, to ignore the obligations imposed upon by the Shari`ah or to knowingly sanction any of the express prohibitions of the Shari`ah etc.
"Minor sins also become major ones if one is guilty of perpetuation in them. Furthermore, efforts to justify even a small sin also add to its gravity. Actually it is the rebellious attitude and stubbornness of the sinner, which can transform these sins into major ones.
