Forcing Wife to do Hijab
Question:
My husband wants me to do parda and he says that if I am not willing he even can beat me. Is this right in Islam? Please advise.
Answer:
Forcing one’s wife to observe the “pardah” that one believes is the directive of God is not justifiable. I do not understand what is the concept of pradah in the mind of your husband. However, I think it necessary to share with you our understanding of the divine directives in this regard. Please refer to 'Norms of Gender Interaction'
Regardless of the correctness or otherwise of one’s views on the issue one is not rightful in forcing and beating wives into observing one’s views in this regard. At best one can do exhortation with kindness and great wisdom.
