Cheating in Exams

Question:
I am a medical student. I want to know whether cheating in exams is haram or not? Please give references from Quran. I also want to know that if its haram how big a sin it is? (though any sin repeatedly done out of vanity is big). Does it come in the category of dishonesty in weighing as done by the nation of Hazrat Shoaib (A.S.)?
I would be highly obliged if you help me in this regard. May Allah bless you. I am highly impressed by your understanding of religion.
Take care

Answer:
Salaam brother
Many thanks for your query. In the opinion of our scholars, Almighty has not created man totally blind in the matter of Guidance. He has provided him with an inborn awareness about what is Good and what is Evil. For example, everyone regards justice, honesty and veracity as virtues and everyone is unanimous in regarding oppression, fraud and deception as vices. His ‘Inborn Guidance’ is complemented with ‘Revealed Guidance’ in the shape of prophets and Divine Scriptures, mainly in those areas where a person is not able to ascertain the right path himself.
We know from our inborn guidance that cheating is legally, ethically and morally wrong and unjust. It results in granting ourselves something, which, rightfully, is not ours and thereby, indirectly depriving someone of what he/she deserved. Hence, there was no need for Quran to explicitly address this issue and declare it haram.
It is difficult to state how big a sin is cheating and whether we can compare it to other forms of dishonesty. Albeit, this much is known that similar apparently small sins can have significant and serious consequences. When a person commits a deliberate sin, his conscious pricks him, however if he ignores it, it can open the doors for bigger and more severe deviations from the path of good for that person. This process may ultimately lead to the complete extinction of that awareness as well as of the spirit of adherence to 'good' in that person.
I enclose a link from a sister web site that provides further clarification on this issue.
We are very grateful for your supportive comments and encouragement. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Best regards
