Celebrating Birthdays
Question:
Is birthday celebration allowed in Islam? Ain't it act of yahood? If it is permitted then why Sahaba didn't celebrate it?
Umm-aymen
Answer:
Salaam sister
Many thanks for your query. There is nothing in the Islamic Shariah that prohibits celebrating a birthday. There is nothing wrong if a birthday party is a social gathering of friends and family and does not involve in it, any activities that are against the ethos of Islam.
The reference to Jews celebrating birthdays refers to the birthday which marks the coming of age of a youngster. Jewish boys become bar mitzvah on their 13th birthday. Jewish girls become bat mitzvah on their 12th birthday. This marks the transition where they become obligated in commandments of which they were previously exempted and are counted as part of the community.
In answer to your question regarding Companions not celebrating their birthday. Respected sister! For something to be deemed prohibited in Islam, it either has to be mentioned in Islamic Shariah i.e. The Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad pbuh; or else it has to contain some activity, which is obviously against the ethos of Islam. There are many activities that a Muslim of today does that the Companions never did.
