Airport of the Hereafter
Waheed-uddin-Khan
Translated by Mukarram Ansari
On one occasion, while travelling by air, I landed at an airport . Along with the majority of the other passengers I came out of the airport after passing through the essential checks but the authorities stopped some passengers; they were told that they needed to undergo further checks. They authorities had received some classified information about these particular passengers and that was the reason the staff behaved in this manner towards them. On observing this scene, I remembered a verse of the Qur'an: “Stop these people; indeed, they are to be questioned” (37; 24).
If you ponder upon this, the situation is comparable to that of our life. The planet Earth on which we live, revolves on its orbit at a speed of a thousand miles an hour. It is as though, we are passengers on such a plane that is speeding towards an airport, this airport is the airport of the hereafter. There will come a time when all human beings would disembark at the airport of the hereafter. Some people would then be told to stop for further interrogation, whereas, there would be other fortunate people present who would be welcomed by angels with these words: “Peace be on you, remain happy; as such, enter the Paradise forever” (39; 73)
All human beings will have to face this situation; all journeys in this world have a fixed duration but the journey towards the hereafter has no set time limit. At any moment, that time may befall a person where the aeroplane of life lands at the airport of the hereafter; and there, will be some people who are then detained for further interrogation whereas others are welcomed by angels and ushered into Paradise. Without any doubt, this is the most essential aspect of this existence upon which all men and women should deliberate, and try to live their lives accordingly. The inevitable may happen at any time without warning; then, no one will get the opportunity again to return.
