Why Religion?
Waseem Aslam
The preference, whether we genuinely believe in a Creator or not, has a significant influence on our lives. It can transform our priorities, expectations and actions.
According to Islam, God has not created us human beings as blind and ignorant, but has provided all of us with in born guidance that helps us discriminate between good and evil in most areas of this life; honesty, justice, fairness and truthfulness are universally accepted morals. There are certain areas of our lives where the right path is sometimes not that apparent. The Almighty has blessed us with guidance to elucidate this path in the form of Messengers and Divine Books; this Divine guidance constitutes religion.
As per Islam, this life is a test and we have been given free will in certain areas to make choices which will determine our everlasting eternal destiny. Religion instructs us to lead our lives in the most Divinely approved manner, furthermore; like a beacon, it pinnacles the successful choices.
The purpose of Islam as detailed in its Holy Scripture Qur’an entails spiritual cleansing; to purify ourselves of wrong doings and to enhance the good within us (87:14). The ethos of Islam is on patience, awareness of God at all times and faith in God in all eventualities irrespective of outcome. The ultimate goal that a true believer aspires for is inner peace, satisfaction and a firm resolve to deal with all eventualities.
Islam is not a novel phenomenon. It is one of the three monotheist religions; in addition comprising Judaism and Christianity. Muslims pray to the God of Moses and Christ (peace be upon them). They believe in Bible to be Divine, albeit not in its original form. Muslims believe in the virgin birth of Christ (peace be upon him). Moses, Christ and Abraham are respected prophets of God. Muslims believe in Heaven and Hell and a Day with destiny, like the two other monotheist religions.
